On Thursday, May 23, 2013, over 60 Masons gathered and attended the “The Old Man Speaks” program hosted by Parker Lodge #97, located in N. Woodstock, NH. A ham, bean & potato salad dinner, prepared by Br. Jay Bartlett and his gang of assistants, fed over 40 of those Masons who were present for the meal. This program, modeled on the popular “John Baker Night” that is hosted in the Fifth Masonic District, is new to the Eighth Masonic District and looks to become a fun and future tradition. This was the brain child of Parker Lodge Past Masters: Ted Houston (chairman), Gardner Chamberlain, and Jim Fadden.
The Lodge was opened on the Entered Apprentice Degree so that all Masons could participate. Chairs were filled randomly (at the previous Masters & Wardens Association Meeting) by all Lodges in the 8th District.
The District Deputy Grand Master of the Eighth Masonic District, R.W. Craig Shippee, was escorted to the East and presided over the evening. A roll call of the the 8 District Lodges provided the attendance figures:
Olive Branch Mount Prospect #16: 5
Doric Centre #20 7 (+1 later)
Mt. Lebanon #32 6
Mooshillock #63 5
Red Mountain #68 2
Chocorua #83 4
Parker #97 13
Phoenix #105 1
Wor. Br. Ted Houston ran the program with the assistance of our Master of Ceremonies, R.W. Br. Al Flateau, Dep. Gr. Lecturer and Past Dist. Deputy Grand Master, 8th District
The following presentations were made:
Jay Bernier, Olive Branch Mount Prospect #16: Why I became a Mason.
Ralph Carter, Donald George, Micah Salado & Ken Allen, Doric-Centre #20: Friendship, Morality & Brotherly Love.
Andy Thomas, Mt. Lebanon #32: I am now the Wor. Master & how I got here.
Antonio Fernandez #63: Installation Night at the Celestial Lodge.
Scott Kinmond #68: (his) Own evolution of Masonry.
Ken Jollimore #83: Becoming & Being a Mason.
Jay Bartlett #97: Never giving up.
Dennis Sheridan #105: Littleton Masonic Temple.
The Judges, all from North Star Lodge #8, were let out of the room so they could do their work. Br. Jay Bartlett was thanked for a great dinner. Out of District Brethren were recognized.
The first award went to the Lodge with the BEST ATTENDANCE, based on total Lodge membership. This award went to PARKER LODGE #97, with about 26% of their total membership. This award went to PARKER LODGE #97, with about 26% of their total membership present. It was further noted that almost 10% of the membership of the 8th District was present.
Upon the return of the Judges, it was noted by the Judges that “all the presentations were excellent”. And Parker Lodge #97 was announced the winner of the Individual presentation, thus giving Parker Lodge a “sweep” for the night.
As the 8th Masonic District Masters & Wardens Association Traveling Gavel was currently at Parker Lodge #97, it was evident that it was time to give it to the 8th District Lodge in attendance with the greatest number of Brethren present. This was Doric Centre Lodge #20, with 8 present. Their Worshipful Master, Br. Bruce McLaughlin was escorted to the East, and presented the Gavel by the District Deputy Grand Master of the Eighth Masonic District, R.W. Craig Shippee (who also happens to be the maker of the Gavel). Br. McLaughlin, noting that his Lodge has been in possession of this gavel many, many times, then proceeded to present it to the Lodge with the next greatest number in attendance, which was Mt. Lebanon Lodge #32, whose Worship Master, Br. Andy Thomas, was pleased to receive it.
Closing remarks from Grand Lodge Officers included: R.W. Br. Dan Hotchkiss, Jr. Grand Deacon, R.W. Br. David Collins, Sr. Grand Deacon, R.W. Br. Ken Clay, Jr. Grand Warden, and R.W. Br. John Lobdell, Sr. Grand Warden, who exclaimed that it was a “wonderful show” that was “fantastic”. A great time was had by all!
Please plan on joining us on Thursday, May 22, 2014 for the 2nd Annual “The Old Man Speaks” night to be held at Parker Lodge #97, in N. Woodstock, N.H.
